Ocean Voices: French
Ocean Voices brings Ocean literacy into the KS4 French classroom, helping students develop their language skills while exploring issues that affect people and communities in French speaking countries.
Designed for ages 14–16, the lesson introduces French vocabulary linked to the Ocean, coastal environments, biodiversity, climate change and fishing. Students explore French-speaking coastal regions including France, Senegal and Canada, helping them understand how the French language connects different cultures and relationships with the Ocean.
Through discussion, vocabulary activities, a fishing industry case study and work with sustainable seafood guidance, students practise communicating ideas and opinions about real-world environmental issues. The resource encourages learners to see language learning as a way to participate in global conversations and understand diverse perspectives.
The lesson is particularly valuable for teachers looking to make French learning relevant, purposeful and interdisciplinary, while supporting students to think about sustainability and the role they can play in protecting our shared Ocean.
