The Ocean Generation board shares our vision of an Ocean free of human threats

We are fuelled by a collective commitment to safeguard our planet’s most vital life support system – the Ocean. 

 

Our Board of Trustees – who govern our charity – are passionate and experienced individuals who share a deep connection to the Ocean and a resolute dedication to preserving its health.

 

Their diverse expertise, spanning environmental science, conservation, business, and advocacy, forms the backbone of our organisation’s strategic vision and decision-making process.

    Philip Scales 

    Philip is Chairman of FIM Holdings Limited, an Isle of Man based financial services group providing fund administration and investment management services. He was a founder director of the Group and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Although retired from executive management, he retains a few directorships of listed companies and collective investment schemes.

     

    Philip has over 47 years’ experience working in corporate, trust, and third-party fund administration. For 18 years, he was Managing Director of Barings Isle of Man (subsequently to become Northern Trust) where he specialised in establishing offshore fund structures.

     

    He became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2017.

    Andrew Cartland 

    Andy is the founder of Acre, (global sustainability focused executive search) and was formerly the deputy chair of Global Action Plan (an NGO specialising in sustainable behaviour change).

     

    Andy is a Zoologist by education, having graduated from Swansea University in 1999.  

     

    He became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2019.

    Alexandra Lazenby 

    Lexi leads marketing, growth and impact for Fortune 500 companies and startups within the UK, Asian and ANZ markets.

     

    Also working with non-for-profits, climate businesses and social enterprises, she understands the power of collaboration between sectors, the sustainability complexities organisations face, the importance of transparent value-chains and nature-based solutions for the corporate sector.

     

    A natural networker and connector in building long-term strategic relationships, and ecosystems, with a love for the ocean and the importance water holds within our environment.  Lexi believes that data-driven storytelling has never been more important than it is today in driving global equity.

     

    She became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2023.

    Edward Garrett 

    Edward Garrett’s passion for the Ocean stems from a childhood spent messing around in boats, and the bug of coastal life, with its reassuring tidal rhythm, and has continued into his professional life – even in London he’s usually got one eye on the state of the tide.

     

    As a philanthropy adviser and charity governance expert, he will be looking to support the Ocean Generation team across the full spectrum of their activities, with a particular focus on the fundraising and partnerships that provide the platform for its immense impact. Edward believes it’s a privilege to be able to combine personal and professional interests and contribute to OG’s continued growth.

     

    He became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2023.

    Emelia Holdaway 

    Emelia brings more than two decades of experience spanning government, development and finance, with deep expertise in climate change, clean energy and sustainability.

     

    She has led major policy and strategy initiatives throughout her career, from shaping net zero policy for one of the world’s largest banks to advising more than 15 governments on their Paris Agreement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

     

    Emelia is passionate about driving practical and collaborative approaches to sustainability and supporting organisations and governments to deliver meaningful climate action.

     

    She became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2026.

  • Laura-Blake-headshot

    Laura Blake 

    Laura is Head of Sustainability at BMT, where she supports board-level strategy and governance for the global environmental and engineering consultancy, specialising in addressing ocean-related challenges.

     

    An alumna of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Laura began her career in the waste management sector before moving into environmental consultancy and sustainability leadership, giving her a broad perspective on systemic environmental change.

     

    Her interests include developing partnership models that bring together businesses, charities and NGOs to unlock funding and deliver social, economic and environmental impact. Laura is also a passionate advocate for removing the socio-economic barriers that limit young people’s connection to, and stewardship of, the natural world.

     

    She became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2026.

  • Nancy Hobhouse - headshot

    Nancy Hobhouse

    Nancy is Director of Sustainability at Advent International, where she leads the firm’s European ESG strategy and global climate initiatives.

     

    She has extensive experience delivering sustainability transformation across sectors, previously leading ESG at Evri (formerly Hermes) and serving as a Non-Executive Director at Ansarada during its successful sale. Earlier in her career, she helped shape group-wide sustainability strategy at John Lewis Partnership.

     

    Recognised as Great British Businesswoman of the Year in 2022 and one of the Top 100 Women in Sustainability in 2023, Nancy is known for her strategic insight and ability to drive meaningful change. She is passionate about supporting organisations to create long-term environmental and social impact.

     

    She became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2026.

  • Alex Stonor headshot-webversion

    Alexander Stonor

    Alex’s passion for the Ocean began as a teenager learning to SCUBA dive in the cold, dark flooded quarries of Belgium, sparking a lifelong enthusiasm for exploring the world beneath the surface. A qualified PADI Dive Master, IANTD Normoxic Trimix diver and RYA Day Skipper, he has developed a deep appreciation for the Ocean and its importance to people and planet.

     

    After studying Law & Politics at Swansea University, Alex joined the British Army in 2009, serving across Central Asia and Eastern Africa. He left regular service in 2017 to focus on public advocacy, particularly in peace and security, and continues to serve in the Army Reserves as a Company Commander.

     

    Alex brings hands-on experience in policy advocacy, public relations and strategic delivery, and is passionate about promoting a wider understanding of why the Ocean is vitally important to us all.

     

    He became a director/trustee of Ocean Generation in 2026.
