About the charity

We improve Ocean Literacy by translating complex Ocean science into engaging content, programmes and practical actions.

The Ocean is our planet’s life support system and is a solution to some of Earth’s biggest problems. 

It provides every second breath we take, captures 30% of human-made carbon emissions, and regulates the climate.  

 

Since 2009, we’ve been experts in Ocean health.

 

Our award-winning documentary ‘A Plastic Ocean’ was named by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time.”

 

Ocean Generation translates complex Ocean science into engaging content, programmes and practical actions.
We’re a UK-registered charity that runs three dedicated Ocean Literacy programmes and shares scroll-stopping, educational content online with our community of +160,000 people. We’re science-backed, UNESCO-endorsed and on a mission to teach the world why the Ocean is so important — and how we can protect it.

Making history

2009

Ocean Generation was established as the first UK charity to address the issue of plastic threatening the Ocean.

2010

Our founder, Jo Ruxton MBE, travelled to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and discovered a far more insidious plastic problem. This inspired the beginning of our filmmaking journey.

2014

We addressed UNESCO’s International Oceanographic Administration at their Paris HQ and screened our teaser film.

2016

‘A Plastic Ocean’ released on iTunes and in cinema screenings. It won 15 awards and became the No1 documentary in several countries. It went on to become the No. 1 documentary on Netflix.

2019

Jo Ruxton MBE, our founder, and Sir David Attenborough spoke at the house of commons, to 50+ MPs, about our Ocean.

2021

We rebranded. With a new look, mission, vision and team. We prepared to lead the movement through the UN's Decade of the Ocean.

2022

Our Ocean Intelligence approach was endorsed by UNESCO as part of the UN's Decade of the Ocean.

2023

We educated and empowered 4 million people through our Comms, Science and Youth Engagement Programmes.

2024

We launched our Wavemaker Digital e-learning platform: Free courses about the Ocean and employability skills for people aged 16 - 25 years old.

2025

The Ocean Academy Resource Hub launched: This makes our science-backed, UK and IB Curriculum aligned teacher resources more accessible to our community of educators.
