How has the Ocean shaped the United Kingdom’s past and present?

Passages Through Time is an interactive Ocean Academy workshop designed for students aged 14–16. Through a blend of history, Ocean literacy, geography, and climate education, the session explores how the Ocean has acted as humanity’s greatest connector throughout history and continues to shape our future.

Students investigate how maritime routes enabled trade, migration, exploration, empire-building, and cultural exchange, while developing key historical skills including source analysis, interpretation, and evidence-based reasoning. The programme highlights the vital role the Ocean has played in the development of Britain and the wider world, while encouraging learners to critically examine the environmental and social consequences of human actions.

Pupils will:

  • Explore the development of the modern world through trade and migration.
  • Understand how historians use evidence to make historical claims.
  • Analyse different interpretations of historical events and perspectives.
  • Examine how climate change is reshaping global trade and transportation networks.
  • Recognise the interconnected nature of the global Ocean.
  • Understand the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
  • Develop critical thinking, communication, and collaborative learning skills.
  • Feel empowered to contribute to a more sustainable future.

This workshop supports curriculum-linked learning while developing Ocean literacy, environmental awareness, and global citizenship, helping pupils understand the connections between history, society, and the health of our planet.
