Why are coastal ecosystems in the UK important?
In these Ocean Academy resources for 7 – 14 year olds, students explore the importance of UK coastal ecosystems and discover how they support biodiversity, store carbon, and protect communities.
Through interactive presentations, activities and inquiry-based learning, students will uncover the threats facing coastal biomes face – from climate change to pollution – and design their own creative solutions.Â
Aligned with our Ocean Generation approach, these resources inspire curiosity and empower students to connect Ocean health with their daily lives, while avoiding fear-driven messaging.Â
Students will:Â
- Understand the role of UK coastal biomes (saltmarsh, seagrass, kelp, bivalves)Â
- Investigate human impacts on marine habitatsÂ
- Explore nature-based and innovative solutions to protect ecosystemsÂ
- Strengthen environmental literacy and problem-solving skillsÂ
- Be encouraged to take positive environmental actionÂ
