WATO is excited to be a part of a week of ocean-themed events coming up in New York. We’re kicking off the week with the World Ocean Festival on 4 June, then heading on to The Ocean Conference from 5-9 June.
The World Ocean Festival will feature an Ocean March, the first of its kind, where a procession of boats will ‘march’ through New York harbour to show support for ocean conservation.
There’s also going to be an Ocean Village, where representatives from organisations involved in art, education, innovation and technology will be present to share updates on their progress and support.
We’ll be at the Ocean Village so look out for our vaquitas roaming around with iPads, and try playing our game. You’ll also have the chance to take the WATO Pledge, and join our Collective.
WATO is involved in a number of events across The Ocean Conference, and we’ll also be hosting our own. We’re excited to be on the ground with our partners, UNOPS, who will be crucial to the implementation of our future projects to help drive ocean conservation forward using the power of digital platforms.
The Ocean Conference is all about creating partnerships to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14, to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. The aim is to bring about collaborations between ‘Governments, the United Nations system, other intergovernmental organisations, academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organisations, civil society, mayors, children, youth and others’. We need partnerships between different ocean stakeholders at all levels to help create lasting positive change for the oceans.
We’re hoping for some great outcomes from The Ocean Conference, and we’re looking forward to taking part in discussions that will form the basis of innovative new partnerships for the oceans.
We’ll be posting updates throughout the week, so keep an eye on our social media to see what’s happening.
